Rolex has a long history of underwater exploration and has created benchmarks for divers’ watches.
Most notably, in 1962, Rolex made history when the brand participated in an expedition to the bottom of the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the ocean, aboard the deep-sea submarine Trieste. Operated by oceanographer Jacques Piccard and U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, the experimental Rolex watch known as the Deep Sea Special was mounted on the exterior of the Trieste, and it accompanied the men to the extreme depth of 10,916 meters (35,814 feet) and withstood the enormous pressure exerted at such depths. With a 41 mm Oyster case, a unique dial with large luminous hour markers and hands, a unidirectional rotating bezel, and an Oyster strap, the Submariner and Submariner Date are among the most recognizable watches ever made. In terms of strong visual recognition, the Cerachrom graduated bezel insert made of high-tech ceramic is the key to its functionality. The Oyster case of the Submariner and Submariner Date guarantees water resistance to a depth of 300 meters (1000 feet). Fitted with a triple water-resistance system, the Triplock winding crown is screwed tightly onto the case for enhanced water resistance.
Designed to be both strong and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is equipped with an Oyster lock safety clasp to prevent accidental opening, and the Rolex Glidelock extension system allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length without the use of any tools.
The Submariner and Submariner Date are equipped with the calibers 3230 and 3235 respectively, self-winding mechanical movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Their construction, manufacturing, and innovative characteristics give them a unique level of precision and reliability. The power reserve of both movements is extended to approximately 70 hours.
